The Overmars Return

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Former Dutch international Marc Overmars is set to make a return to professional football, according to Dutch newspaper De Stentor. The 35-year-old who retired four years ago, will be joining Dutch second division side Go Ahead Eagles, where he began his career in 1990.

The retired winger, who has 86 caps and scored 17 goals for the Oranje, impressed during a farewell match for Jaap Stam against Ajax. His opponent George Ogararu was having a difficult evening against the former Arsenal star.

Overmars started his career in 1990 with Go Ahead Eagles and spent most of his career playing for Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona. With Ajax, he was part of their famous 1995 Champions League-winning side. His €40 million move from Arsenal to Barcelona in 2000 made him the most expensive Dutch footballer ever.

Series of injuries forced the Dutchman to quit professional football in 2004 and took over the role of general manager with Go Ahead Eagles. However, with the club finishing a disappointing 10th last season, Overmars has vowed to return to action in order to help the club 'move forward'.
