Villarreal moved within four points of fourth-placed Real Mallorca after coming from behind to beat Racing Santander 2-1 at El Sardinero.
Racing went ahead just before half-time when teenager Sergio Canales used his chest twice to control the ball at the edge of the area before swiveling around his marker to send a left-footed shot into the top corner.
But Villarreal hit back after the break with Diego Godín levelling up the scores in the 70th minute before Nilmar slotted home the winner with seven minutes remaining.
