La Liga round-up: Atlético secure Champions League berth

Sunday, May 31, 2009

Atlético Madrid ensured they will play in the Champions League in two consecutive seasons for the first time after defeating Almería 3-0 at the Vicente Calderon.

Sergio Agüero opened the scoring in the 19th minute when he turned two defenders inside out before firing a left-footed shot across goal and into the far corner.

The home side double the lead on 27 minutes as Raúl García streaked at the far post to head home Maxi's free kick.

Almería were presented with a great chance to pull one back just before the break when their top scorer Álvaro Negredo was put clean through, but he slipped over with only Leo Franco to beat.

Diego Forlán then added a third five minutes after the break with a stunning strike from 25 yards to practically clinch the Pichichi trophy.

The Uruguayan now has 32 goals, with nearest challengers Samuel Eto'o (30), David Villa (28) and Lionel Messi (23) all finishing their campaigns this evening.
