Cristian Chivu leaps to Adrian Mutu’s defense

Sunday, January 31, 2010

Inter Milan defender Cristian Chivu has spoken out in support of fellow Romanian international Adrian Mutu, who is being accused of doping.

Mutu had been tested positive for anorectic substance Sibutramine – a hunger suppressant – after a January 10 match with Bari and a Coppa Italia tie with Lazio 10 days later.

It is rumoured the Fiorentina striker unknowingly ingested the substance inside herbal diet pills he took while at home over the Christmas break.

"Adrian has always been obsessed with thinness," Chivu told gsp.ro.

"He always used to take pills in order to preserve his body, his agility. It is likely that he took the wrong pill in this case. It certainly was not intentional.

"As professional players we are told not to take anything without a medical prescription. Perhaps Adrian disregarded this advice."

He added: "It is a delicate situation that involves one of my friends.

"We must stand by him. Adrian is an important player of Fiorentina and the Romanian national team. He deserves respect."
