Player banned for trying to stuff whistle down ref's throat

Friday, February 11, 2011

An Italian amateur soccer player has been banned for 20 months forr trying to force a whistle down a referee's throat after he was sent off.

Andrea Biondi decided to act out every disgruntled players fantasy after he had been sent off while playing for amateur side Albereta 72 in Florence.

So incensed was he at his dismissal for insulting the referee that he grabbed the back of the official's head and tried to push the whistle into his mouth, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

After being pulled of the referee and sent on his decidedly not merry way, Biondi is reported to have continued insulting and threatening the referee.

Despite the extraordinary events, Albareta still managed to salvage a 2-2 away draw to Sancat.
