Premier League: Chelsea 2-1 Portsmouth

Thursday, December 17, 2009

Avram Grant endured an unhappy return to Stamford Bridge as the Portsmouth manager saw his side lose 2-1 to Chelsea.

The Blues went ahead in the 23rd minute when Nicolas Anelka slotted home from Alex's pull-back for his eighth goal of the season.

A battling Pompey side fought back after the break and capitalised when Jamie O'Hara's free-kick free-kick hit the wall, cannoned off Ashley Cole's head straight to the unmarked Frédéric Piquionne who volleyed home from close range.

Marc Wilson, though, undid the hard work of his team-mates in the 79th minute as he chopped down Branislav Ivanović inside the penalty area and Frank Lampard converted to ensure Pompey continue to prop up the division.
