Premier League: Man United 3-1 Chelsea

Monday, September 19, 2011

Reigning champions Manchester United stretched their 100 percent start to the season to five games with a 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford.

The home side took their first opportunity of the match when Ashley Young's free-kick was headed home by Chris Smalling, who was fractionally offside when the ball was whipped in.

Then, out of nowhere, Nani increased the lead on 37 minutes when he controlled Jonny Evans' cross-field pass and took on three defenders before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 25 yards.

Things got worse for Chelsea before half-time with Wayne Rooney scoring the third after John Terry's attempted clearance had ricocheted into the striker's path.

But Chelsea pulled one back within 30 seconds of the restart as Nicolas Anelka's defence-splitting pass played in Fernando Torres to dink a cute finish above David de Gea into the net.

United should have put the match beyond Chelsea on 55 minutes, but Rooney put a penalty wide as he slipped on his run-up after Nani was fouled in the area by José Bosingwa.

Chelsea should have set up a grandstand finish when Torres went clean through again seven minutes from time but, after skipping round de Gea, he somehow contrived to shoot unacceptably wide in the face of an impossibly easy open goal.
