La Liga round-up: Osasuna pull off great escape

Monday, June 1, 2009

Osasuna pulled off an unlikely escape after fighting back from an early deficit to defeat nine-man Real Madrid 2-1 on a dramatic final day of the La Liga season.

Osasuna, who started the day in the final relegation spot, could barely have suffered a worst start as they fell behind inside 10 minutes when Gonzalo Higuaín controlled Lassana Diarra's long ball and cut inside his marker before smashing a low left-footed drive past Ricardo.

But the lead lasted just 3 minutes as Jaroslav Plašil leveled soon after when Iker Casillas let the Czech midfielder's shot through his hands at the near post.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men from the 56th minute when Míchel Salgado was sent off for impeding Plašil's run toward the area.

Osasuna completed the comeback four minutes later when Juanfran volleyed a long-range strike beyond Casillas and into the top corner of the net.

Real also lost Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to a red card late on as they slumped to a fifth successive defeat.
