Saturday, January 23, 2010

Real Madrid, through the Real Madrid Foundation, will finance the reconstruction of the St. Gerard School in the Carrefour-Feuilles neighbourhood of Haitian capital Port-au-Prince.

The foundation, along with the NGO Acoger y Compartir, will create a social and football academy whose goal will be to provide children with adequate nutrition and health care to prepare them for the future.

The UN has estimated that 3 million Haitians were affected by last week's quake and 2 million require food assistance.

Presenting Project Haiti: Building The Future, Real president Florentino Perez said: "Thousands of people lost everything in one of the most devastating earthquakes of all time.

"Therefore, we are putting our best humanitarian tool, the Real Madrid Foundation, into action. Our goal is to help rebuild the future.

"We have another inherent humanitarian challenge before us which is none other than to rebuild the St. Gerard School, where 300 children were trapped in the rubble.

"Haiti needs us all and this project is of the utmost importance."

Los Merengues have been cooperating with Haiti since 2004 through their foundation, distributing sporting goods, supporting the Spanish troops on UN duty and collaborating with local NGOs.
